Woman of the Most High God: What lies ahead for our young people?

What’s going to happen to our young people? Young people have not been taught respect for the elderly, to parents, to the church. Jesus said to honor your father and mother that your days may be long upon the earth.

Many children have no discipline at home and teachers have trouble with them at school. Even schools are limited to how they can discipline children. Young people don’t want to work at home like taking the garbage out. They play on their phones or on computers. They are not given any responsibility.

Young people don’t want to get a job, and there are many jobs available out there. Everybody always needing help in restaurants, Walmart stores, fast food places, but you can’t make them get a job. And some parents don’t want children to get jobs so they can be home to do what they want them to do.

It’s not fair to these young people. They need to learn to have responsibility and to be able to earn money for themselves. They need to learn that everything can’t be handed down to them. They must earn their keep.

How many young people will get a job this summer and earn some money for themselves? How many will buy some of their own clothes, special school clothes they want? To get money to go to the fair and spending money?

We need to train our children to work, no depend on the government to keep them. We must teach them to keep themselves.

In the Old Testament we are told if we don’t work, we don’t eat. In Bible times they had to work. Are we any different than them? They were either farmers, hunters or gatherers. Women took care of the home, like cooking, sewing clothes, providing for their families. Things have changed today.

When I was growing up, I got a job in the summertime. Even if it was picking strawberries for my neighbor, iron their clothes, cleaning houses on weekend and on days off from school. I liked earning my own money and sharing with those in our house. It made me feel proud that I could help contribute to my family.

God, help us train up our children to care for others and share what God has given us, not always taking but sometimes being able to give back to others. We are to earn our help by the sweat of our brow.

Yours in Christ Jesus,

Rev. Teresa Reid
