Walk off those holiday calories


TAYLOR COUNTY—Stay fit through the holidays with the new Holiday Wellness & Walking Challenge from WVU Extension Service Family Nutrition Program!

The six-week challenge will start November 25 and run through January 5. 

The six-week challenge will be based on points.  You can earn four points each day for a total of one hundred sixty-eight points, with a bonus four points for maintaining the same weight within five pounds at the end of the challenge. 

Participants will be asked to weigh themselves once a week and send their weight and steps into Jeanette Coole, Nutrition Outreach Instructor.

There are many benefits to walking including fitness, mental health, and overall health. 

Implementing an exercise program in which you walk two miles a day can help people lose weight by burning more calories than is usual for the person. With proper gear and a good plan, folks can increase their metabolism and reduce body fat. Walking with a friend can help keep motivation up. 

“Join me in the Holiday Wellness & Walking Challenge.  Let’s keep up our holiday cheer and our health,” said Coole. 

You can also earn one point each (per day) for drinking 64 ounces or more of water, taking 5,000 or more steps, eating five or more veggies and fruits or drinking zero sugar sweetened beverages. 

“With this challenge, we are expanding our health and not our waist.  The goal of this challenge is to maintain,” expressed Coole.
