GRAFTON—The Tigers made the trip from Elkins to Grafton to take on the Bearcats under the lights of McKinney field on Friday.
The Tigers came into the game with in 0-3 record looking to upset the Bearcats who were sitting at 2-2 on their season.
The Bearcats put the first score on the board, when #15 Blake Moore found the endzone, leaving the Tigers empty-handed. With a kick through the uprights, the score was 7-0, in favor of the Cats.
The stands erupted in cheers and the energy from the field could be felt when #18 James Hoskins intercepted an Elkins pass. The glory was short lived, and the Tigers answered with an interception of their own.
In an attempt to build their lead, the Cats called on their kicker, who sailed the ball through the uprights, gaining 3 more points on a successful field goal for Grafton.
The Bearcats would hold the Tigers scoreless for the first half of the game, entering the halftime with a 10-0 lead over Elkins.
After half time, Elkins carried the ball down the field for a touchdown, but after their extra point attempt fell flat, the scoreboard stood at 10-6 in the third quarter, with the Bearcats still leading Elkins.
The Tigers would find their stride and begin picking up the pace as the time ticked down in the third quarter. Elkins defenders would snag a Bearcat pass, taking the intercepted ball down the field, into the endzone, for a Tiger’s touchdown.
Again, their extra point attempt fell flat, bringing the score to 12-10, in favor of the Tigers. With momentum behind them, the Elkins team was able to find the endzone once more, and after a successful two-point conversion, the score sat at 20-10 with five minutes left in the third quarter.
During fourth quarter play, the Bearcats would find a hard time slowing down the Tigers, allowing another touchdown and conversion, bringing the score to 28-10.
The Tigers’ defense would hold the Bearcats scoreless in the second half of the game, and Elkins walked away with the win, 28-10 over the Cats.
The Bearcats will be back in action next Friday, October 9, when they travel to take on the Lumberjacks of Richwood. The game is set to kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
