Three week period goes live on Monday


TAYLOR COUNTY— Sports teams across the county will be coming together beginning Monday, June 13 for an off-season practice period.

The three-week live period provides an opportunity for student athletes to remain active and sharp on their skills for their upcoming seasons, and also gives players who may be wanting to tryout a sport the chance to do so before fully committing. 

For Taylor County Middle School (TCMS) sports, volleyball will take place June 13-July 1, Monday through Friday from 6:00-8:00p.m., at the school. 

The Knights cross country team will also practice during this period starting on June 13 and 14, at West Taylor Elementary from 7:00-8:00 p.m. and June 16 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at TCMS.

During the second week, TCMS XC will be held on June 20 at West Taylor and June 23 at TCMS also from 7:00-8:00 p.m. and will conclude the live period with final practices on June 27 and 28 at West Taylor and June 30 at TCMS. The season is slated to begin on August 1, with practice at West Taylor at 6:00 p.m.

The Knights basketball team will come together starting Tuesday, June 14 from 4:00-5:30 p.m., June 15, from 8:00-9:30 p.m. and June 16 again from 4:00-5:30 p.m.

During week two, the Knights will practice Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4:00-5:30 p.m., with details on week three still to be announced. 

Meanwhile, the Lady Knights basketball program will conduct the live period June 13,15 17,21,23 from 4:00-5:30 p.m., and June 25 from 9:00-10:30 a.m., with a scrimmage at Lincoln scheduled for June 20. Week three to be determined.

The TCMS soccer programs will also be participating the week of June 13-17, June 20-24 and June 27- July 1. Girls Soccer will be from 6:00-7:00 p.m. and the boys soccer team will be 7:00-8:00 p.m.

TCMS football’s three-week practice period begins Monday, June 13, as well, and will take place that week along with the week of June 20 and June 27 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on the Knights’ practice field. 

Coach Mickey Foley will also be opening Bearcat Football practice to students entering ninth-12th grades in the fall on June 13-17, June 20-24 and June 27-July 1 from 7:30-10:30 a.m.

Practice/conditioning for Bearcat volleyball is slated for June 13-24 from 8:00-10:00 a.m. in the Scotty Hamilton Gymnasium. 

Any girls entering grades 9-12 at Grafton High School (GHS) who are interested in soccer are invited to June practice. Their schedule is as follows, June13-17, 5:30-7:30 p.m. ; June 18 home scrimmage, 9:00 a.m.; June 20-24, 5:30-7:30pm; June 25 scrimmage, TBD; June 27, 4:00-6:00 p.m. and June 28-30, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

The boys soccer program will be utilizing the three-week period, as well,  starting the week of June 13-17 and continuing for the next three weeks from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

The GHS Basketball period  will take place from 6:00-7:30 p.m. starting Monday for the Bearcats and from 7:30-9:00 p.m. for the Lady Bearcats. 

Cheerleading conditioning will begin a little later, with the first practice week being June 20-24 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., and Bearcat wrestling will host June practices June 20-24 and 27-30 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. 

A completed physical is required for any student wishing to participate in the three-week period. These practices are not mandatory and do not guarantee a spot on the team, however, coaches do encourage attendance for those interested in playing.
