GRAFTON – The Taylor County Middle School basketball teams will be under new direction this coming season as both the Knights and Lady Knights will welcome new coaches.
The new boys basketball coach will be Jonathan Curran who coached the GHS freshman last season. Curran, who played college basketball at WVU under Gale Catlett and John Beilein, will bring the fundamental game back to TCMS.
“Our goal in the program this season is to develop our players,” said Curran. “This season we are working on fundamentals and basketball I.Q. It seems like a lot of times at this age if the player has the fundamentals he may lack the basketball I.Q. and vice versa. So it’s my job to develop both so when these kids get to GHS they will be ready to play for the Bearcats,” he added.
The new coach for the Lady Knights will be Robbie Jacobs. Jacobs has spent the last several years coaching girls basketball in the AAU circuit up and down the east coast. If the Jacob names sounds familiar it’s because one of his daughters played at GHS last season and another daughter is currently playing as a sophomore at GHS.
Coach Jacobs will bring the same sound fundamental basketball game to the court at TCMS much like Curran will for the boys.
“My goal this season is to get these girls fundamentally sound,” said Coach Jacobs. “We started off at the beginning of the year going back to the basics. We are learning how to dribble, pass, shoot, rebound and play sound defense and once all those things come together we should have a pretty good season,” he added.
The boys opened their season on Tuesday night at home against Westwood and the girls traveled to Westwood on the same night.
