Taylor County Little League back in action after COVID delay

GRAFTON—Due to the recent uncertainty surrounding the safety of its coaches, players and families as the number positive COVID-19 cases in the county spiked temporarily, the Taylor County Little League took a week off before resuming play this past Monday.

TCLL President Tim Hussion said that the quick increase in the number of cases led the TCLL board to halt play for a week under the recommendation of local health officials before they returned to the diamond for competition this week.

“We postponed last week; we had a smaller uptick in the county,” Hussion said after a game on Tuesday. “We haven’t had many cases to begin with so when we got that little uprise, we kind of took a step back to see how it would progress.”

When it was deemed safe again, games began on Monday under the previous COVID-19 safeguards which involve pre-game temperature checks and thorough sanitation procedures.

“I think we are taking the proper precautions to get these kids back out here playing baseball where they need to be,” Hussion added.

There are currently three contests per evening during the week (one game in each of the three divisions), and two games each Saturday in the C division.

The four A-Division teams (10/11/12-year-olds) this season are the Williams Contracting Royals, the Keystone Realty Group Pirates, the Gavin Strong Orioles, and the Triple B Gutters Athletics. Head coaches are Mike Moats (Royals), Jarrod Mlinarcik (Pirates), Zach Sheme (Orioles), and Mike Nestor (Athletics)

The B Division this season is made up of three teams of nine and ten-year-old players. Teams competing in that division are the Toothman Ford Yankees, the Mark Zeck State Farm Phillies, and the Summers Dairy King Dodgers. Head coaches are Alan Wilfong (Yankees), Justin Wolford (Phillies), and Jason Knotts (Dodgers)

There is also the C division, which are the six, seven, and eight-year old players, and that league is managed by Julie Dowdy.

Participating teams are the Lesa’s Place Pirates, the Bevilock Racing Mariners, the Bartlett Funeral Home Orioles, the R&R Services Nationals, and the Findley Excavating Rangers. Head coaches are Dowdy (Pirates), Michael Johnson (Mariners), Josh Wininger (Orioles), Jimmy Newlon (Nationals), and Michael Shaffer (Rangers).

Hussion also made the announcement a few weeks ago that Tee-ball has indeed been canceled for this season.

TCLL scores and standings will be updated periodically as information becomes available.
