MORGANTOWN—A former Fairmont Senior football standout who the Grafton Bearcats know very well recently garnered some hefty preseason expectations on Monday.
Darius Stills, a senior defensive lineman for West Virginia University, was named to the 26th Annual
Chuck Bednarik Award “watch list” by the Maxwell Football Club of Ambler, Pennsylvania. The Maxwell Club was established in 1935 to promote safety in the game of American football. Named in honor of legendary college player, official, and sports columnist Robert W. (Tiny) Maxwell, the club was founded by his friend Bert Bell, then owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, and later commissioner of the National Football League. The awards are generally presented during the spring of the following year.
Stills was recently named to Athlon Sports’, Lindy’s, and Phil Steele’s 2020 All-Big 12 Conference 1st Teams and was also was named to the Lott Trophy Award watch list. The 2019 All-Big 12 1st-Team selection finished his 2019 season with 47 tackles and a team-leading 14.5 tackles for loss with seven sacks. He also recorded a forced fumble, two pass breakups, and a blocked field goal. He tied with his brother Dante for second in the Big 12 Conference in sacks and was fifth in the league in tackles for loss.
The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year very season since 1995. Bednarik was a former standout at the University of Penn and also with the Philadelphia Eagles. He is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 3rd while the three finalists will be revealed on
Nov. 23rd. The winner will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 10th. The formal presentation of the award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by the Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on Mar. 12th, 2021.
This year’s watch list consists of 10 players from the Big 12 Conference and the entire list is divided among position groups.
Included among the positions considered are 26 defensive linemen, 32 linebackers, and 32 defensive backs.
