Selected for as this week’s Taylor County Athletes of the Week are two who possess qualities that make them elite players in their respective sports.
Spencer Copeland is a junior at Grafton High School and is in his first year as a Bearcat soccer player.
However, according to his coaches, he meshes into the team as if he’s been a member for years.
GHS coach Arthur Knight shared that Copeland had played soccer with some of his fellow teammates at a younger level prior to his family moving away from Taylor County.
Upon their return this summer, he was quick to find his old teammates and get back on the field with them.
Copeland has been an asset to the Bearcat soccer program so far this year, as the team continues their undefeated streak.
In the team’s recent win over Notre Dame, Copeland assisted Grafton to a 5-0 shutout over the Fighting Irish, with a hat trick, scoring three goals in the one game alone.
“Spencer has great vision on the field, and his individual skills make him a threat to the opponent every time he touches the ball,” shared coach Knight.
In addition, Copeland is described as a student of the game, always willing to take constructive criticism and make the necessary adjustments, while also leading his teammates to strive for better.
Copeland has been a welcomed addition to the Grafton High School Soccer program and has fit in perfect with the team’s current roster, despite his years away.
Another local athlete leading by example is Taylor County Middle School eight grade football player Kaden Keener.
Keener has been playing football in Taylor County since reaching the eligible age and has only continued to excel in the sport as he moves forward.
Keener shocked the community two years ago playing for the middle school as a sixth grader, not only keeping up with the pace of play from the bigger, and more experienced players, but often surpassing his older opponents and recording more sacks than any other player of his age in the area.
Keener has worked hard and made a name for himself, quickly becoming the one to watch, and the one his opponents can’t seem to stop.
During the Knights’ season opener on Thursday, Keener recorded ten carries for 128 yards and earned three touchdowns.
And while his competitors have a hard time stopping him, Keener finds taking down his man to be no problem.
When it came to defense at the contest, he would record 19 tackles, quite an impressive feat for an athlete at the middle school level.
In addition, he was also credited with a fumble recovery, that led to a Knight touchdown.
According to his head coach Bobby Beltner, Keener is the type of athlete every coach wants on their team.
“He is always working to prepare, never complains, always makes personal sacrifices for the team and leads by example,” he said. “He is fun to watch and coach.”
Congratulations to Spencer Copeland and Kaden Keener on being named as this week’s Taylor County Athletes of the Week!
