Salvation Army focuses on back-to-school time

TAYLOR COUNTY—As the summer starts to dwindle down, the Grafton Salvation Army has begun to shift their focus to back-to-school time.

In an attempt to ensure children in need are equipped with the necessary for their success, the charitable organization has set their sights on their annual school supply program.

The Salvation Army takes part in a backpack program each year that provides much needed school supplies to families in the area who need assistance.

The Grafton Salvation Army has begun accepting applications for their backpack program for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year, and organizers are encouraging parents to get their registrations completed, because it is a first-come, first-serve program.

Interested individuals will need to visit the Beech Street location on Tuesdays and Thursdays from now until August 12 to register. Applications are hanging on the wall inside the door and may be filled out and dropped off.

From collecting school supplies through donations from area residents and businesses, to filling backpack and distributing them, the Salvation Army relies on the generosity of the community.

Backpacks will be filled with common school supplies including pencils, erasers, pencil boxes, pens, colored pencils, highlighters, rulers, scissors, glue sticks, glue, folders, notebooks, loose leaf paper, crayons and markers and then distributed to children enrolled in the program.

“We are always welcoming any donations for school supplies. If someone would rather donate monetarily, we would gladly accept that as well,” shared Salvation Army Captain Dee Stewart.

She disclosed that donations can be made at their Beech Street location during regular business hours, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Monetary donations can be mailed to the Grafton Salvation Army, 111 Beech Street, Grafton, WV 26354.

Stewart also shared that their doors are always open to those wishing to volunteer.

“We often rely on the kind hearts of volunteers, especially when we are hosting special programs such as the backpack distribution,” she noted. “We will always welcome help from the community.”

And as a way to further assist families in Taylor County, the Salvation Army Family store is currently holding a Summer Blast Sale, that is offering deep discounts on clothing, shoes and other items children might need for the upcoming school year.

“During the sale, everything in the store, excluding furniture will be just 99 cents,” shared Stewart. “It’s the perfect time to start that back-to-school clothes shopping for your kids. Be sure to stop by and check out our merchandise!”

The Grafton Salvation Army Family Store is open Wednesday through Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
