Robert G. “Bob” Riffle, 84, of Flemington, WV, passed away suddenly on Friday, November 29, 2019, at the United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, with his family by his side.
He was born at Crawford (Lewis County), WV on May 24, 1935, a son of the late Robert Brooks and Erma Pearl (Wimer) Riffle.
Mr. Riffle is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Juanita M. (Powell) Riffle, whom he married on July 16, 1954.
In addition to his wife Robert is survived by two children: Sandra “Sandy” Brown and husband Virgil of Flemington, and Robert G. “Bobby” Riffle Jr. and wife Sherry of Fairmont; one sister, Shirley Riffle Broadwater of Fayetteville, PA; four grandchildren: Bridget Brown, Joseph Brown, Jason Riffle, and Ashley Riffle; two great-grandchildren: Eddie Brown and Dominic Figuerio; three step-grandchildren: Jill, Jodie, and Bryan; five step great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Tom Burton of Flemington.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by one son, James Michael Riffle and one sister, Wanda Jean Burton.
Bob was a graduate of Flemington High School Class of 1953 and then served his country honorably in the United States Army as a Warrant Officer Ordnance Corps, with two tours of duty in Vietnam and also two tours in Korea. He later worked in real estate and was always a hard-working farmer. Bob was a past Mayor of the Town of Flemington, was very instrumental in forming the Taylor Co. Youth League, and helping oversee the construction of the Flemington ball field. Having been proud of his military service, Mr. Riffle was also vital in the establishment of the Flemington Veterans Memorial Park. He took great care in the youth of the community and was a big supporter of the Mt. Vernon Elementary School, where he would give gold dollars to students who excelled. Bob was also a supporter of the Flemington Lions Club, helping support their work by selling brooms and mops and also traveling to Stonewall Jackson Lake with his wife where they would help with roasted chicken sales. When he wasn’t working or helping his community Bob loved traveling, especially cruises with Juanita.
Family and friends will be received at the Bradley J. Mayle Funeral Home in Flemington, WV, on Tuesday, December 3, 2019, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 4, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Lois Sandy presiding.
Interment will follow at the Flemington I.O.O.F. Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded.
