GRAFTON—Preparations are in full swing for the annual Spirit of Grafton Festival and Memorial Day celebrations.
The Grafton Police Department would like to remind drivers and citizens that road closures will once again be affecting their route through the downtown area.
Beginning at 5:00 p.m., on Thursday, May 26, Main Street will be closed from the intersection of East Main Street and Bridge Street to the intersection of West Main and Latrobe Streets, in preparation of the Spirit of Grafton Festival.
Although there will be a sign positioned under the traffic light in front of the Post Office, the section of Main Street up to the intersection with Latrobe will be open for parking during the festival.
The department advises that all vehicles parked along Main Street, will need to be removed from the closure area by 5:00 p.m., on Thursday, or they will be towed at the owner’s expense.
The closure must occur so that vendors may access the area to begin setting up their booths, games and attractions.
The Spirit of Grafton activities will kick off on Friday just as it has in years past, with a pool party at the City of Grafton Municipal Pool. Kids of all ages are welcome to come a take a dip from 6:00-8:00 p.m., to start the weekend off right.
Downtown will be abuzz with activity as Cartoon Headquarters will be in town with their Inflatable Fun Zone Center, an obstacle course and plenty of games for the whole family to enjoy from 6:00-10:00 p.m.
To wrap up a night of fun and excitement, be sure to head over to the main stage from 8:00-9:30 p.m. for some live music by Little Texas.
The celebration will continue on Saturday, May 28, with tons of fun for the whole family. Beginning at 1:00 p.m., attendees can take part in Cartoon Headquarters Inflatable Fun Zone Center, try their hand at an obstacle course and visit games. All of this will be provided until 10:00 p.m.
The BMX Bike Stunt Team will have you on the edge of your seat, as they perform thrilling stunts. The first show is set to take place at 2:00 p.m., followed by another at 3:30 p.m. and finally a last showing at 6:00 p.m.
This year’s guests will be able to take in critters at two separate events. Join the Wild World of Animals on the main stage at 3:00 p.m., and then follow that show up with a trip to the Barnyard Petting Zoo on grounds of Mother’s Day Shrine from 3:00-5:00 p.m.
The night will culminate in a musical performance you won’t want to miss as country star Darryl Worley returns to the Spirit of Grafton Main Stage at 8:00 p.m.
Then, following his show, fireworks will light up the night sky to help close out this year’s celebration.
Officials remind residents that this schedule is subject to change due to weather or any unforeseen circumstances.
Then, on Monday, May 30, as Grafton prepares to welcome guests from far and wide to the 155th Memorial Day Parade and Observance, Main Street will be closed to traffic once more, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
This time, the road closure will take effect from East Main Street at the intersection with Bridge Street, and run along the parade route, which runs through downtown, across Memorial Bridge to Beech Street and right onto Walnut Street, ending at the Grafton National Cemetery.
Portions of Boyd and East Washington Streets will also be closed for the parade line up.
All vehicles along the parade route will need to be removed by 7:00 a.m., or they will be towed at the owner’s expense.
The route will reopen following the conclusion of the parade, but officers with the department would like to caution motorists to be patient, as there will be an increase in the number of vehicles in the area, as well as heavy foot traffic along the route.
