GRAFTON—Seeing a need for activities to keep the youth of the area engaged and out of trouble, as well as a desire to provide fun, family-friendly events for the whole community, the City of Grafton has teamed up with the Grafton Police and Fire Departments in the hosting of special events.
“Before COVID hit, I had talked with City Manager Kevin Stead about hosting events for families in the area, and we both decided that it would be a great thing for the community,” explained Grafton Police Chief Bobby Beltner. “Now that the virus is under control, and we have moved back toward normalcy, we decided it was the perfect time to start.”
With ideas flowing of possible events, the entities began planning fun outings for community members to enjoy. When it came time to decide where to host the events, Beltner said it was an easy decision.
“We wanted to showcase all of the time, energy and money the city has put into the town’s playgrounds,” he revealed. “We have some really great outdoor spaces here locally, so we made the decision to change up the location each time to show them off.”
The first Grafton Parties in the Park event is occurring tonight, Wednesday, June 9, at 8:30 p.m.
Residents and guests are invited to enjoy an evening of laughs as they take in the zany antics of Tom and Jerry, during Movie Night at Central Playground.
The playground, located between Knotts Avenue and Wilford Street has seen many upgrades in the recent years, and will be the perfect spot for families to gather for an outdoor evening at the theater.
Attendees are asked to please bring with them their own lawn chair or blanket to take in the show.
Drinks and popcorn will be provided, during the free event for the community.
And while parking can sometimes be a headache, organizers have guests covered, providing parking on the top deck of the city parking garage, with transportation to and from the playground.
Then, on Friday, June 11, from noon until 2:00 p.m. Grafton Parties in the Park will be presenting Hotdogs and Hoops at Maple Avenue Playground.
Come out for an afternoon of fun, with a competitive edge, as there will be plenty of games for guests to take part in.
“We will be offering cornhole and other games, as well as a hotshot competition,” disclosed Beltner. “There will be fun for the whole family.”
Get your basketball skills in check, because prizes will be offered to the top ballers during the hotshot competition.
Guests will be treated to hotdogs, chips, sno-cones and drinks. And take out is available, as well.
“We are excited to offer these free, family-friendly events,” expressed Beltner. “We want everyone to know that these events are not just for those living the neighborhoods surrounding the playgrounds, but are open to anyone and everyone that would like to attend. We hope to see you out and about, as Grafton parties in the park.”
