Reed Between the Lines with GHS Athlete Jocelyn Countryman

In this edition of Reed Between the Lines: Grafton Lady Cats Basketball and Soccer Player Jocelyn Countryman

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am 17 years old and an athlete at GHS. I’ve played soccer, basketball, swimming, and tennis throughout my high school years and plan on attending Penn State after graduation.

When and why did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball in the 6th grade because it’s nothing like anything I’d ever done before so I was like why not try something new?

When and why did you start playing soccer?

I started playing soccer at the age of 4 and fell in love with the sport as I got older.

What is your favorite movie about sports?

Coach Carter.

Who is the best athlete you’ve ever played against?

Ashton McKane. She played soccer for RCB and graduated last year.

What is the most bizarre question you have ever been asked by someone about basketball or soccer?

Someone asked me one time if it is hard to play soccer and then go straight into basketball after one another.

What is one rule change that you’d most like to see happen in sports?

Definitely the rule about pre-wrap. Does it really need to be the same color?

What are your best and worst memories in athletics?

My best memory is definitely in basketball when I started as a freshman. My worst would have to be always getting hurt. It kind of gets in the way of things.

If you could be a successful professional athlete in any sport, what would you choose and why?

I would love to be a professional athlete in lacrosse because it looks like so much fun and you get to hit people with sticks (or something like that).

What one word or phrase do you think describes you?

Sassy.

Give me one word or phrase to describe your current soccer coach, Lorraine Isner.

Determined.

Give me one word or phrase to describe your current basketball coach, Andrew Moore.

Supportive.

You get to spend the day with anyone (past or present), who do you choose and why?

Jennifer Aniston. She plays Rachel in one of my favorite TV shows (Friends) and she seems like so much fun.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I see myself living in another state and getting a job with whichever I path decide to go down.

What do you think you do well as a player?

I think I work hard, and I’m dedicated in everything I do. I never give up.

What do you think you need to work on as a player?

Definitely my attitude. It gets me in the most trouble, especially in basketball.

Where is your favorite away venue play a sport?

Philip Barbour for sure.

What is the toughest position to play on the soccer field and why?

I personally think goalie is the hardest because when other players kick those balls at you they can be very hard sometimes and you’re the last person to get through so the pressure is on you.

What is the toughest position to play on the basketball court and why?

I think it would have to be up top because they handle the ball the most.

I typed your last name as “Workman” in one of the articles I wrote. I have no idea why I typed that. Are we good now?

I was not happy when it happened, but we’re good now lol
