Pre-K and kindergarten registration dates set for 2020-21 school year

TAYLOR COUNTY— It’s that time of year again to get ready for registrations. If you have a little one ready to start school in the fall, the Taylor County Board of Education will be conducting registrations in February.

Pre-K Coordinator Shannon Lewis shared that preschool registration will be held at the schools in the beginning of February and that it is a collaboration with Taylor County Schools, Little Feet Day Care and Preschool and the North Central WV Community Action Agency (Head Start).

Lewis shared that they are really excited to continue the collaboration with the organizations and, they look forward to getting your little ones enrolled.

Parents are encouraged to start the enrollment process and can pick any day or location to do so.

Registration forms are available at the schools or online by visiting https://taylorcountyboe.net/

“As a reminder with the new WV laws for Pre-K entrance, students must be 4 years old prior to July 1, 2020,” she reported.

Registration will be held on Tuesday, February 25, at West Taylor Elementary; Wednesday, February 26, at Flemington Elementary School; and on Thursday, February 27, at two locations— Anna Jarvis Elementary School and Little Feet Daycare and Preschool.

For Pre-k Registration, parents or guardians are asked to bring with them their child’s original certified birth certificate, health check form, dental check form, immunization records and social security card.

In addition, they will be holding the Pre-K Screening Day on Thursday, May 7, and Friday, May 8, at the Good Shepherd Church.

Appointments will be scheduled for the screening on registration days. The screening day will consist of vision, hearing, fine/gross motor, speech and more.

If you have any questions about Pre-K Registration, please contact your local elementary school or call Lewis at 265-2497, Ext. 121.

In addition, the Taylor County Board of Education will conduct kindergarten registration on February 3-6.

Children who will be five years old before July 1, 2020 should be registered. Parents are requested to contact the school to schedule an appointment for registration.

According to the Board of Education, children must be registered at the school that serves the attendance area in which they live.

State law sets the size of kindergarten classes. If more children register than a school has room, a child may be placed in another school. These adjustments will be based on the date the child registered and where the child lives.

Children who will be five years old between July 1 and July 31, 2020, may be eligible for possible Advanced Placement into Kindergarten in the fall.

Parents of these children are also asked to call for an appointment to register their child for possible Advanced Placement into Kindergarten if they are interested in pursuing that option.

For kindergarten registration, parents or guardians are asked to bring with them their child’s original certified birth certificate, health check form, dental check form, immunization records and social security card.

If a certified birth certificate has not been obtained by the date of registration, the parent may get an application for acquiring one at the school the day of registration.

The board would also like to remind parents all children entering school must be immunized against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, polio, rubeola (big measles), and rubella (three-day measles).

Children will not be allowed to enter kindergarten in the fall if the immunizations are not complete and the child’s birth certificate in not on file with the school.

The registration and screening dates are as follows: Monday, February 3, at West Taylor Elementary School, Tuesday, February 4, at Anna Jarvis Elementary School, Wednesday, February 5, at Anna Jarvis Elementary, Thursday, February 6, at Flemington Elementary School.

In the event of a snow day, registration appointments will be rescheduled for the same day and the same time the following week.

If school is on a two-hour delay the registration will start at 10:00 a.m. and earlier appointments will be worked in.

Parents are requested to contact the school to schedule an appointment for registration. West Taylor Elementary School can be reached at by phone at 304-842-0490, Anna Jarvis Elementary School at 304-265-4090 and Flemington Elementary School at 304-739-4749.
