MINERAL WELLS – The Grafton High School cross country teams left Grafton early last Saturday as they traveled to Mineral Wells to run in the Chick-fil-A Invitational. The Cats did not come home with any first place finishes but many of them set personal records during the event.

The Cats ran against teams from Winfield, Williamstown, Ripley, Parkersburg, Ritchie, Caldwell, East Fairmont, Parkersburg South, Woodrow Wilson, George Washington, Wayne, Doddridge, Wheeling Catholic, South Charleston, Paden City, St. Marys, John Marshall, Huntington, Linsly, Marietta, Pikeview, Herbert Hoover, Point Pleasant, Oak Glen, Tyler Consolidated, Notre Dame, Wirt, Philip Barbour, Roane, Cameron, Nitro, Shady Springs and Scott.

In the team competition the GHS boys finished in 15th place and the Lady Bearcats finished in 18th place.

“The boys ran really well.  I’m going to say that most, if not all of the boys had PR’s (personal records) today,” said head coach PD Louzy. “Matt Cather turned in another outstanding run and the other runners are getting stronger every race. We still have some work to do to catch some of the teams in our region,” he added.

“On the girls’ side, we had several PR’s as well.  Meredith Maier led the team today with a solid performance. Both teams are trending in the right direction for this time of year,” Louzy concluded.

On Tuesday the Cats headed to Doddridge County to run in the Doddridge County Invitational.

Both the boys and girls teams had great days as they both finished in sixth place.

Meredith Maier was once again the top runner for the girls with a 33rd place finished followed by Emily Cather with a 35 place finish. The remaining Lady Cats running were Sierra Walls (40th), Emma Curry (42nd), Collins (46th), Destiny Walls (48th), Moats (71st) and Iva Kay Sipes (77th).
