MORGANTOWN—Although the 2019-20 NCAA basketball season was cut short a few weeks ago due to concerns over the rapidly-spreading coronavirus, the recent release of WVU men’s basketball’s non-conference schedule for next season should get Mountaineer fans excited about what’s in store for the future.
After playing one of the toughest schedules in the country this past season, WVU head coach Bob Huggins and his staff have again assembled a challenging non-conference schedule, highlighted by a neutral court game against Purdue, a home game against long-time rival Pitt, another Big 12/SEC challenge, a Big 12/Big East Battle, and a trip back to the Bahamas where another field of elite programs will be looking to take the tournament title away from West Virginia. Committed to the tournament for this coming season are Creighton, Duke, Memphis, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Utah, and Wichita State.
“We just played the second-toughest schedule in the country and this schedule will be no different,” said Huggins, who will be entering his 14th season at his alma mater. “This is another challenging schedule for our guys, and a schedule that Mountaineer Nation will enjoy.”
After claiming a 68-53 win at the Peterson Event Center on November 15th, the Mountaineers will “welcome” Pitt back to the Coliseum almost a year to the day, on November 13th. WVU has won four straight games against the Panthers in the Backyard Brawl.
West Virginia will open their 2020-21 regular season with four consecutive games at the
Coliseum. The regular season opener will be on Tuesday, November 10th against Fairleigh Dickinson. The Knights and Mountaineers will meet for just the second time in school history, with the other matchup also coming in Morgantown back in 1977.
WVU will also meet Stony Brook for the first time in school history on November 17th at the Coliseum, before playing Bowling Green just three days later, on November 20th.
The Mountaineers will face Robert Morris for the first time in 10 years on December 9th in Morgantown, before taking off for their huge showdown against the Purdue Boilermakers in the Hall of Fame Invitational in Brooklyn, New York on December 13th.
