New twist for annual Grafton High School Alumni Game

GRAFTON—The Grafton Bearcats annual Alumni game has a new twist this season, thanks to a clever redesign by Lady Bearcats head coach Andrew Moore.

Moore decided that in order to garner more interest in the event, he would create a “Family Fun Night,” which would consist of a fun-filled evening concluded by the alumni game.

“We are trying to create a buzz in the community about the game of basketball,” stated Moore. “The boys just came off of a state tournament run and we saw the opportunity to build off of that.”

The Family Fun Night will be held on Saturday, November 30, at Scotty Hamilton Gymnasium at Grafton High School.

The first event starts just before 6:00pm and a schedule of events is listed below.

“In the past, we have had alumni games as a fundraiser for the girls’ basketball team,” explained Moore. “This year, we have decided to add to it and make it a “Family Fun Night” of basketball. The night will consist of a preview for the middle school and high school basketball teams, as well as the GHS cheerleaders.”

“ The night will start off with an introduction of all the team members before moving into some games for the kids to play. Team previews will lead into a 10-minute scrimmage that will showcase the athletes from all of the teams,” he further explained.

The GHS Lady Cats basketball team, coaching staff, and parents will be responsible for running the event. A schedule of events will be available upon entrance to the gymnasium and admission is only $2 for adults, while school-aged students will be admitted for free.

Any student who wishes to participate in any event will sign up as they enter the building that evening. Alumni game participants will check in and then pay the $15 for their shirt.

“We would like to thank our sponsors for this event as they helped purchase the t-shirts for our participants to wear,” expressed Moore.

“The sponsors are Lindsay Gray from Keystone Realty, Little Feet Daycare, Triple B Gutters, Chessie Federal Credit Union, and Black Bear Customs. Without the support of those individuals and businesses, events like this aren’t possible.”

“I would also like to thank Lori Shumaker (GHS Principal) and Rich Bord (GHS Athletic Director) for their continued support of our program,” he added.

If you would like to participate in the alumni game, please reach out to Coach Moore via text at (304) 672-1850 or via email at [email protected]

Pre-registration must be submitted by November 15th to guarantee a t-shirt. All other participants can sign up the night of the event.
