MORGANTOWN—Although many college football schedules for the upcoming season are still not set, new rankings are being posted almost daily.
Coming off a 5-7 campaign in 2019, the West Virginia Mountaineers football team received no votes in this year’s preseason Amway Coaches’ Poll. It’s the second straight season the Mountaineers have begun the season without a single vote.
Familiar names are again at the top with Clemson, Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, and LSU making up the Top 5, in that order.
The Big 12 Conference has four teams ranked in the Top 25 with Oklahoma (#6), Texas (#14), Oklahoma State (#16), and Iowa State (#14) all making the cut. In addition to those four teams, Baylor and TCU also received votes.
The last time WVU was ranked in the preseason Coaches’ Poll was in 2018, when it began the season ranked 20th. They also started out the 2017 season ranked 20th but were unranked the previous four seasons. The only preseason during that four-year stretch in which the Mountaineers received any votes was in 2015, when they collected a mere three votes, which placed them 44th overall.
In addition, the only time in the past ten seasons that West Virginia started a season unranked but finished in the Top 25 of the Coaches’ Poll was in 2016, when it went from receiving no preseason votes to a 10-3 record and a #17 final ranking. Over the past decade, WVU also finished a season ranked in the Coaches’ Poll in 2018 (22nd) and 2011 (18th).
The other major college football poll, the AP Poll, is expected to release its rankings in the next couple of weeks.
