GRAFTON—On Monday, the West Virginia men’s basketball team moved to 3-0 on the season with a scrappy first-round win over Northern Colorado in the Cancun Challenge at the WVU Coliseum.
Tonight, the Mountaineers look to continue their run in the tournament as they host the Boston Terriers at the Coliseum for a 7:00pm tipoff.
Boston (3-2) is coming off a 78-70 upset of previously undefeated South Carolina on Tuesday. The Gamecocks entered that contest fresh off of a 27-point win against Cleveland State last Friday.
Boston topped South Carolina in most statistical categories, including field goal percentage (42.2%), three-point percentage (36%), free throws (15/22), assists (15), steals (7), and turnovers (11 to 13).
They will be facing a WVU squad who looks close to finally having a “complete” team, with Coach Bob Huggins using a variety of starting lineups and looks to get the right combination on the floor during the early season.
Through their first three games, the Mountaineers (3-0) have been led by senior guard Jermaine Haley, who is averaging 12.7 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per game. Sophomore forward Emmitt Matthews Jr. has also been a big contributor, averaging 12 points and six rebounds per contest. Also averaging double-digits in points is sophomore power forward Derek Culver, posting 11 ppg to go along with his 6 rpg.
Freshman standout Oscar Tshiebwe has also seen significant minutes, averaging 9.7 in both points and rebounds this season in almost 22 minutes of action per game.
For the visitors, the Terriers are led by 6’6 sophomore guard/forward Walter Whyte, who averages 16.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest. They also have two other players averaging double figures in scoring as both senior Max Mahoney and junior Javante McCoy average 11.2 ppg.
Regardless of the outcome against Boston tonight, the Mountaineers will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Riviera Maya, Mexico to face off against the Northern Iowa Panthers at the Hard Rock Hotel.
Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 8:30pm and will be shown on the CBS Sports Network.
