CABELL MIDLAND – Meredith Maier competed in the AA-A WV State Cross Country Championships last weekend at Cabell Midland. The freshman runner for GHS finished with an impressive 51st place finish with a time of 22 minutes and 37 seconds.
Maier, who raced against 135 of the top runners in the state, is competing in cross country for the first time in her sports career and she has been a standout this season for the Bearcats. Coach PD Louzy had nothing but great things to say about her performance at this meet and for her entire season.
“She was a little disappointed with her time, but I thought it was pretty good considering the weather conditions and the size of the meet,” said Coach Louzy. “Never running at this course, in this type of meet can be a little intimidating. She handled it well,” he added.
Maier also will run track and play basketball for GHS this season.
“I told Meredith that with the shape she’s in, she should be able to run up and down the basketball court for four quarters with no problem this year,” joked Louzy.
As with many teams, the GHS cross country team is more than a team, they are a family.
“Some of her teammates made the trip to watch her, which I thought was great too. Hopefully, we bring both teams down next year. That’s always the goal,” concluded Louzy.
