GRAFTON— Taking the area’s youth softball league by storm, coach Julie Dowdy’s 11U Base Invaders recently captured their tenth straight win, handing losses to teams from Glenville, Clarksburg, Bridgeport, Shinnston and most recently Barbour County.
On Monday, the Base Invader team added to their nine-game winning streak with a 14-2 road victory over a Barbour County team.
Makayla White going things started offensively for the Invaders on a single during her first at bat, her play, followed by a double from Adree Wiles, a Mya Johnson triple and singles by Braelynn Jones and Kaizley Carr, brought four home to take the early 4-0 lead.
During the bottom of the first, Jones led the Base Invaders from the circle, while Wiles stayed down and ready as catcher.
A strong performance from Jones would be a quick three and out for Barbour, as she struck out their first three batters.
As Dowdy’s girls continued with their offensive rhythm into the top of the second, Olivia Barker sent one flying for a triple. Victoria Drainer would bat next. On her connection, Barker sped home, recording another run for the Base Invaders.
An eventful inning for the Invaders brought in four more runs, with White on a double and Wiles following with her first in-the-park home run of the season.
At Johnson’s bat, she would be hit by Barbour County’s pitcher and take first base, with Jones later bringing her home as she smashed her fourth in-the-park homer for the season.
However, because of the five-run rule, Jones’s base run home would not count as a scored run.
The bottom of the second once again saw Jones send all three Barbour batters back to the dugout.
At the top of the third, Barbour’s strong defense kept the Base Invaders from adding to their side of the board with the score holding steady at 9-0.
Starting to see the contest slip away, Barbour County was able to take advantage of a pitcher change, with Barker in the circle at the bottom of the third for the Invaders and would score two runs. However, a good defensive performance from the Base Invaders held Barbour at just those two runs with two outs at first base and an out made by catcher Wiles.
The fourth would once again see the five-run rule enacted for the Base Invaders with quick runs made by Jaydence Garcia and Barker. Following their runs, White would triple at her bat brining home Harper Gerkin, Drainer and Hadlee Price.
Going into the bottom of the fourth, the Base Invaders would once again sub pitchers, passing the torch to White, while Garcia took Wiles’s place at catcher to close out the game.
White would start the inning with two strike outs, and defensively, the Base Invaders would get the last out at first base.
With the 14-2 road win, Dowdy’s Base Invaders recorded their tenth straight victory and moved to 11-1 on the season.
