This week’s Taylor County Athletes of the Week are proving to be a dynamic duo on the baseball field.
Levi Newlon and Mason Markley are members of the Grafton Senior League baseball team, which the pair has led to a winning 10-6 season against some formidable competition.
Grafton Senior League Manager James Newlon shared that this season the team was faced with District 5 opponents; the district consists of tough area teams from Bridgeport, Fairmont, Kingwood, Reedsville and North Marion.
However tough the competition, the combo of Newlon and Markley were able to rise to the challenge and played the roles of encouragers and leaders among their team.
Newlon completed the season with a .525 batting average and was 2-0 from the pitcher’s mound.
Markley had some big swings on the season, as well, finishing with an average of .515 and went the duration of the season only allowing one single hit against a reputable and older Reedsville program.
Newlon and Markley are both credited for being instrumental in the team’s three recent wins.
The first two were in the form of a double-header against Reedsville, and the duo brought their team to victory in both of those contests.
Next up, the Grafton Senior League faced off against a North Marion team for their final game of the season, and once again was led to victory by Newlon and Markley.
And in addition to being a dedicated duo on the field, Newlon and Markley are also dedicated to their studies, finishing out their middle school careers at Taylor County Middle School as 4.0 students.
Congratulations to Levi Newlon and Mason Markley for being named as this week’s Student Athletes of the Week, and making positive impacts on the field, while keeping up in the classroom.
