GRAFTON— On Wednesday evening, prior to the Lady Bearcats of Grafton and the Lady Bulldogs of Frankfort taking to the field, the home team recognized their senior players.
During the traditional senior night ceremony, Grafton High School’s (GHS) Frederique Maloley, Amber Smith and Gracen Purkey were honored for their time, dedication and sacrifice that they have each put into the program over their four years at GHS.
Maloley started the game for the Lady ‘Cats, and manned the mound for seven innings, coming away with an impressive performance on her night of honor, recording 21 outs and 14 strikeouts, while allowing just two runs on four hits, over seven innings.
While Grafton was strong from the mound, Frankfort matched the tempo, as Lady Bulldogs pitcher Avery Noel also toed rubber for seven innings, striking out 14, walking zero and allowing just one hit.
Grafton’s lone hit was recorded by Maloley, with fellow Lady Bearcat Mattie Shaver having the most chances on the field with 14.
Keeping things even against the strong Frankfort team, the contest went without a run by either group for most of its time, however, a pair of late runs by Frankfort cost Grafton a win.
The contest, belonged to anyone for most of its duration, as both teams were tough in the pitcher’s circle leading to a no run situation until the final inning.
After six scoreless innings, Frankfort’s Kinser and Roots made their way home in the seventh.
Out of time, the Lady Bearcats dropped the contest late, by a score of 2-0.
Despite the loss, the Lady ‘Cats showed a great deal of hustle and sportsmanship, holding strong until the final minutes, and still enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate the bittersweet departure of Maloley, Smith and Purkey.
Then, on Thursday, the Lady ‘Cats would enter play against the Liberty Mountaineers, with the decision once again coming in late, with a 6-5 advantage in favor of the Lady Mountaineers. Grafton’s runs were scored by Maloley (2), Purkey (1), Abby Wyer (1) and Savannah Wyckoff (1).
Grafton kicked off sectional play yesterday at home against Preston. The consolation game will take place today at noon, with the championship game slated for 2:00 p.m.
