Last minute basket takes down Preston

GRAFTON—J.T. Veltri drained a jump shot as time expired to lead the Grafton Bearcats boys’ freshman team to a 54-52 win over the Preston Knights on Thursday in Kingwood.

The Bearcats built a small lead after the first half, moving ahead 15-9 after the first period and taking a 22-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Veltri would score 15 of his game-high 25 points in the second half, including the game-clincher as time expired, to lead Grafton to the two-point win.

“We started off strong and then handled some adversity with one of our players (Alex Hess) going down with an injury,” said Grafton head coach Hartsel Keener after the game. “Then the boys stepped up with a “next man up” mentality, kept battling as a team, and pulled out the win on a jump shot from J.T. Veltri as time expired.”

Grafton was led by Veltri’s 25 points, followed by a big game by Cole Mooney and Bryson Bish, who scored 12 and 9 points in the win. The Bearcats also got solid contributions from Garrett Hudson (4 points) and Hunter Mayle and Bryson Kittle, who each chipped two points apiece.

The Bearcats will be back in action tonight as they host East Fairmont in their final game of the season. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00pm.
