Lady Knights have a successful first week of play

PRUNTYTOWN—The Lady Knights Soccer team has been busy this season so far, taking on teams in true Knights fashion, leaving it all on the field.

During their first week of play, the Lady Knights took on teams from North Marion, Elkins and East Fairmont.

The girls opened their season against the North Marion Husky Pups, an opponent that was well matched, as the score was held 0-0 through the first 45 minutes of play. The Knights defended their goal nicely, but with 14:15 left in the second half, the Husky Pups were able to find the back of the net, bringing the game’s final score to 1-0.

The Lady Knights then traveled to Elkins, where they took on the Elkins Middle School Hornets. The Knights walked away triumphant, with a score of 4-2. Goals were credited to Hadley Horne, Riley Countryman, Madalyn Haddix and Anna Poling.

Then, the Knights took on another group of Hornets, this time from East Fairmont Middle. The Lady Knights were once again victorious, shutting out the Lady Hornets 4-0. Jennah Charlton led the Lady Knights with three goals in the match, and Hadley Horne found the back of the net for one.

“These ladies are a blast to coach,” expressed Head Coach Joey Haddix. “We have coached almost all of them at some point, while in the Taylor County Soccer Association, so we knew what we were getting into!”

Haddix’s coaching style focuses not only on the field but academics, as well.

“Our motto is ‘academics first, athletes second,’ meaning, anything you do in school will directly affect your game time,” Haddix noted. “We want these young ladies to excel in school as well as on the field, with no excuses.”

He also shared that he would like to commend the hard work of his ladies for following the proper guidelines associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Haddix added, “I am proud of how hard they have been working to get where they are. With each game, they are getting better and better. We are definitely looking forward to the rest of the season!”
