Lady Cats lose on the road

LOST CREEK—The Grafton High School Lady Bearcats traveled two hours to Weirton, WV last Saturday to take on the Weir Red Riders.

The Lady Cats trailed early to the Red Riders 13 to 6 in the first quarter with three Lady Cats scoring two points apiece.

The Red Riders continued to surge in the second quarter scoring eight points and the Lady Cats scoring four points. At the half, Grafton trailed Weir 21-10.

The second half showed as much as it did in the second quarter. The Red Riders outscored the Lady Cats 11 to 6 in the third and 10 to 9 in the fourth. The final score was 42-25 Weir. 

Maier led the Lady Cats in the scoring column with nine followed by Bria Jacobs with six. The remaining points were scored by Bailey Toothman (4), Jocelyn Countryman (2), Alyssa Satterfield (2), Tori Jackson (1), and Fredrique Maloley (1).

In the JV game, the Lady Cats defeated the Red Riders 24-4.

The Red Riders took an early lead in the first quarter where the score was two to one. Maddie Summers was the only one scoring for Grafton with a free throw.

In the second, it was all Lady Cats scoring 11 points and held Weir to zero points in the quarter. This 11-0 run was led by Shayla Poling scoring three points.

In the second half, it was all Lady Cats with their explosive offense and shut down defense. The Lady Cats outscored Weir five to one in the third and seven to one in the fourth. Grafton’s defense didn’t allow a point from the floor to Weir in the second half.

Summers led the Lady Cats with five points followed by Poling and Mia Chambers with four. The remaining scorers were Tehya Hern (3), Kenna DeLaney (2), Maggie Dunham (2), Amber Smith (2), and Isabella Swiger (2). 

The Lady Cats will be back to action this Wednesday after New Year’s Day as they will host Keyser High School at the Scotty Hamilton Gymnasium. JV tips at 5:45 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
