Lady Cats find a unique way to put fans in the stands this season

Above is an example of what fan cutouts that will be created to pack Scotty Hamilton Gymnasium will look like.

GRAFTON—Because of the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions that threatened to put a halt to the 2020-2021 sporting season before it even began, many indoor and most major winter sports have seen some changes to their rules and regulations.

This year, to limit the number of people gathering inside sports facilities, only immediate family members of players can attend indoor games.

Knowing that the empty stands could mentally affect their players, some of the coaches of Grafton High School (GHS) sports came up with a unique way to simulate a crowd at their upcoming games.

GHS has teamed up with Varsity Graphics Fundraising Programs to produce fan supplied cutouts to be installed in the bleachers during the games, as a way to pack the stands with familiar faces, through their Fan In the Stands program.

The idea came from a larger scale, with many collegiate or professional sporting events, and even some late-night talk shows, sporting the cardboard creations in their venues.

The GHS Lady Bearcat Basketball team will be the first to install this new system.

Participation is as simple as snapping a picture of yourself decked out in your favorite Bearcat apparel or blue and gold and then submitting it to the program, so that your sign can be displayed in the stadium.

One you’ve decided on your perfect picture, visit where you can locate their Fans In The Stands participating schools, where you can scroll down to find GHS. After clicking on the Grafton link, you can upload your picture to purchase your very own fan cutout.

According to the website, each contour cut sign is printed one-sided in full color on sturdy 4mm coroplast sheeting. All signs, measuring 30” tall x 15-3/4” wide, are weather and waterproof and are good for both indoor and outdoor use.

The cost is $25 for each cutout, and all the proceeds from the sale will help support the GHS Girls Basketball program.

So, get decked out in your fan gear and get ready to show off that Bearcat pride to help fill the gymnasium with Grafton fans.

The deadline to participate is February 22, and signs will be ready for boys’ and girls’ basketball games starting March 3.
