Lady Bearcats unable to defend PB shooting

GRAFTON—After coming up short against the Philip Barbour Lady Colts during the championship round of the Sam Bord Tournaments, the Lady Bearcats were looking for redemption Thursday evening, as they met up with them once again at Scotty Hamilton Gymnasium.

Unfortunately, Grafton couldn’t claim the redemption they sought.

The Lady Cats got off to a slow start with just a single basket in during the first quarter, while the skilled shooting of the Lady Colts’ roster quickly racked up 13.

Sydney Friend would add a triple for the Lady Bearcats during the third, while Amber Smith and Alyssa Satterfield each connected on a bucket to give Grafton nine points heading into halftime, still trailing the Lady Colts by 18.

After their halftime talk, the Lady Cats began to chip away at the first half deficit with baskets from Hadley Horne, Satterfield and Jodi Keene. However, the shooting game of the Lady Colts continued to be strong, as they would add 11, maintaining a comfortable lead.

With the score sitting at 38-16 going into the final quarter, Grafton was able to improve on their outside shooting and get some clean looks underneath.

Friend once again earned three on an outside shot, with Smith connecting on a triple of her own. Both Friend and Smith would also add a field goal for Grafton during the fourth quarter, while Izzy Swiger and Satterfield claimed baskets, as well.

The efforts of Friend, Smith, Swiger and Satterfield racked up 14 points for the Lady Cats in the fourth, outscoring the Lady Colts by seven.

This, however, would not be enough to catch PB, as they escaped with the 43-30 victory.

Smith and Satterfield led the varsity Lady Cats with eight points each, while Friend tallied six.

The JV Lady Cats also fell to PB’s JV squad on Thursday night, as the Lady Colts shooting proved difficult to defend.

The Lady Colts sunk six three pointers on the night, compared to two from the Lady Bearcats, from Nevaeh Johnson and Amidy Cook.

After a close first quarter of action, the JV Lady Colts were able to run away with it in the second have, earning the win with a score of 46-27.
