Lady Bearcats rally to beat Preston 12-0

GRAFTON—The Grafton High School softball team earned their second win of the season Tuesday night, as they hosted the Lady Knights of Preston High. The Knights jumped out to a seven-run first inning, but the Lady Cats never gave up as they rally late to defeat the Knights 12—10.

Seniors Maddie Simmons and Ally Peters led the Lady Cats with three hits apiece against the Knights.

The remaining GHS hits came from Chalee Trimble (2), Aubree Collins, Katie Grinnan (2), Mia Chamber (2), Maddie Knotts, Haley Curry (2) and Tori Jackson.

The GHS runs were scored by Peters (2), Trimble, Collins, Madelyn Countryman, Simmons (2), Olivia Shaver, Knotts (2), Curry and Jackson.

Chamber was on the mound for GHS, as she earned her second win for the blue and gold. Chambers recorded eight strikeouts, allowed 12 hits and only allowed two walks in the seven innings.

“They played hard, stayed patient and put the bat on the ball,” said head coach Tyler Cox.

“After giving up 7 runs in the first, we showed a lot heart and character and fought back. The seniors Ally (Peters), Chalee (Trimble), Katie (Grinnan), and Maddy (Simmons) came up big for us tonight,” he added.

The Bearcats were not as fortunate on Wednesday night, as they hosted Berkeley Springs. The Cats could not make the defensive plays when needed and in the end fall to Berkeley Springs 13—7.

Chambers was once again on the hill for the Lady Cats. She tossed all seven innings, striking out three batters, allowing 11 hits and only two walks.

Freshman Aubree Collins had a perfect night from the plate, as she went three for three with two singles and one triple.

The remaining Lady Cat hits were recorded in the book for Grinnan, Chambers and Curry.

The Bearcat runs were scored by Peters, Trimble, Collins (2), Grinnan, Knotts and Curry.

The girls will be back in action today, as they travel to Keyser to play a double header. The first game will be against Keyser at 3:00 p.m. and the second will be against Frankfort at 5:00 p.m. The girls will then play in a tournament in Keyser, on Saturday.
