Lady Bearcats outlast Lady Falcons,5-4, in round one of sectionals

RIDGELEY, WV— After ending April with one last regular season win over the LAdy bucs, the week for the Lady Bearcats’ softball program began with the first round of sectional play, as they faced off against the Frankfort Lady Falcons on Monday evening. 

Grafton would take the lead early in the first, with Abby Wyer getting the Lady ‘Cats’ offense started with a deep home run on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs. 

At the bottom of the first, the Lady Falcons managed to get one on the  board, still trailing Grafton 2-1. 

The Lady Bearcats would widen their lead during the second inning, scoring an additional run. 

Two quiet innings followed, the score at 3-1 going into the fifth, with the Lady Falcons looking to make a comeback. 

Frankfort was able to collect runs during the bottom of the frame when Aubrie Roots hit a fielder’s choice that resulted in two runs. The runs erased Grafton’s lead and tied the game at 3-3. 

Still tied after a scoreless sixth inning, Grafton senior Frederique Maloley would single on a 1-1 count during the top of the seventh, scoring a run. 

 And it would be the Lady ‘Cats’ one run advantage in the final inning that sealed the 5-4 Grafton victory. 

Maloley pitched the Lady Bearcats to victory, going the duration of the contest allowing just four runs on three hits and striking out eight, while Avery Noel suffered the loss for the Lady Falcons, also going seven innings. Noel allowed five runs on seven hits, sent 12 back to the dugout and walked one. 

Maloley also led Grafton offensively, recording three hits on four at bat opportunities and scoring one run. 

Gracen Purkey, Wyer, Kaileigh Spiker and Jordan Niggemyer also recorded one run each. 

The win advanced the Lady Bearcats to the second round of sectional play against the Keyser Tornadoes. This contest took place yesterday, and the outcome will be featured in an upcoming edition.
