Lady Bearcats earn post-season honors

GRAFTON—The West Virginia Class AA Girls All-State Basketball Team, as selected by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association, was released recently and two Grafton Lady Bearcat players earned their way onto the team due to their hard work and stellar play.
Sophomore Meredith Maier (3rd Team), and junior Bria Jacobs (Honorable Mention), helped lead the Lady Cats to a 15-9 record this past season before a tough loss to Petersburg in sectional play would unfortunately close out their season.
Maier, in just her second season for the Lady Cats, led the team in most statistical categories, including points (14.5), assists (2.5), rebounds (11.1), steals (3.0), free throws made (57).
“Meredith achieving 3rd Team All-State is a great accomplishment,” said Grafton head coach Andrew Moore. “She’s a very hard worker that really puts in the time to get better. She’s off to a great start for her high school career but she would be the first to tell you that she isn’t satisfied and will continue to get better.”
Jacobs, who handled the point guard duties for Moore’s talented squad, also had an excellent season in her own right, averaging 9.3 ppg, 2.2 apg, 2.1 spg, and got to the free throw line often, leading the team in free throw attempts (97).
“I’m so happy to see Bria Jacobs get the recognition of being named Honorable Mention All-State,” Moore went on to say. “I feel that she is one of the top point guards in the area. I’m anxious to see how she closes out her high school career next season.”
