GRAFTON—Coming off of a tough road loss to regional opponent Keyser last Tuesday, the Grafton Lady Cats basketball team had a week to rest and refocus for their next game, a home contest against Buckhannon-Upshur on Thursday.
Although the Lady Cats would play inconsistently to begin the game, they would lead by one point after the first period and take a 24-19 lead into the locker room at halftime behind Meredith Maier’s eight first-half points.
Grafton and Buckhannon-Upshur would play closely throughout the third period, with the Lady Cats clinging to a 33-32 lead heading into the fourth. But the Buccaneers would get a spark from sophomore guard Shelby McDaniels, who scored nine points in the period, connecting on 7-of-10 free throws and then hittting another bucket, to close out the victory for Buckhannon by the score of 51-45.
“I am proud of the girls tonight for their effort defensively,” said Grafton head coach Andrew Moore after the game. “We played with a lot of passion and effort but unfortunately we didn’t make enough plays at the end. We also made some uncharacteristic plays with our passing tonight that allowed them to have some run outs. In a tight game where every possession is a battle, you can’t afford to give up easy baskets.”
The Lady Cats have a tougher schedule coming up, and Moore understands that it’s games like the one he just coached that help teams build character and toughness moving forward.
“These are the types of games that help prepare you for the postseason,” explained Moore. “These are the games that we have to learn from and make sure we don’t make the same mistakes.”
For Grafton, Maier would finish the contest with 12 points, followed by Bria Jacobs’ seven. Sophomore Alyssa Satterfield had another solid game, finishing with six points and knocking down both of her three-point attempts. Tori Jackson also scored six points for the Lady Cats, while Bailey Toothman (5), Fred Maloley (4), and Mia Chambers (2) rounded out the scoring.
In JV action, the Lady Cats would drop a 36-23 decision to the Buccaneers as six Grafton players were able to get in the scoring column. Freshman Eva Jones finished with five points, followed by Amber Smith (4), Katie Scherzinger (4), Sydney Friend (3), Izzy Swiger (2), and Jordan Niggemyer (2).
The Lady Cats were scheduled to play this evening at East Fairmont, but that game has been cancelled. Their next scheduled game is at Bridgeport on Tuesday at 5:45pm (JV) and 7:30pm (varsity).
