Knights topple Hilltoppers on the road, move to 3-0 on season

PRUNTYTOWN—The Taylor County Middle School (TCMS) Knights Football team loaded up the bus and hit the road for their first away game of the season. The Knights traveled to Clarksburg’s Hite Field, to take on the Washington Irving (WI) Middle School Hilltoppers.

TCMS would be quick to get the action started and set the bar high for play, as Troy Weber received the kickoff, effortlessly returning it for 75-yard Knights touchdown. Kaden Keener’s two-point conversion was punched in, putting the Knights on the board 8-0, with 7:41 left in the first quarter.

WI would attempt to find the endzone, driving down the field, but would fall short of answering the TCMS points, going into the second quarter scoreless. However, a completed pass would put WI on the board, but their extra point attempt fell short, bringing the score to 8-6.

The Knights were quick to respond, with Keener punching in another touchdown, and with a Weber two-point conversion complete, the score sat at 16-6 with 4:02 left in the half.

WI would fall victim to a Cole Runner interception with just 1:12 left before halftime.

The Knights, faced with a long field, put the ball in the hands of Jaxon Hall, who broke free and raced to the endzone, racking up a 72-yard run resulting in a TCMS touchdown. Weber again punched in the extra point attempt, bringing the score to 24-6 with under a minute left in the half.

The Hilltoppers came out in the second half of play, looking for revenge, and quickly found the endzone. Their field goal attempt fell short, setting the scoreboard at 24-12.

TCMS answered back quickly, as quarterback Chace Kinsey’s pass found Weber on a fourth and long situation, resulting in a Knights touchdown. Weber would attempt the two-point conversion but was brought down short.

With 5:30 remaining in the third, the score sat at TCMS 30, WI 12.

Three minutes later, Runner once again snagged an interception for the Knights. Hall once again breezed past defenders, finding his way into the endzone with 2:04 remaining in the quarter.

Weber made his way into the endzone, adding two more points for the Knights, bringing the score to 38-12.

Both teams continued to move the ball, but the fourth went scoreless, until Jonathan Maier broke free and found the endzone with just 3:29 left in play. The Knight extra point attempt was good, bringing the score to 46-12.

For the remainder of the game, the Knight’s defensive line held tough, not allowing the Hilltoppers to make headway, and securing the win for TCMS with a final of 46-12.

“I thought we played pretty well,” said Head Coach Bobby Beltner. “The kickoff for a touchdown to start the game kind of set the tone.”

“Offensively, we were pretty solid all night,” he added. “And defensively, that might have been the best we have tackled in four years.”

The 3-0 Knights will be back in action this Wednesday, September 22, at home, when they take on Mountaineer Middle School. The action is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
