Knights Football drops winning streak Wednesday

BRIDGEPORT—In a battle of unbeatens at Wayne Jamison Field in Bridgeport on Wednesday, the Taylor County Middle School Knights football team fell to host Bridgeport Middle by the score of 42-0.

Kenny Humphries led the Knights statistically on both sides of the ball, rushing for 56 yards on 14 carries and recording six tackles on defense.

But the story of the game would be the Knight’s inability to finish drives on offense and stop Bridgeport on defense, as TCMS would turn the ball over a total of three times in the game to the Braves.

Bridgeport opened up the scoring with 3:41 left in the 1st quarter with a 12-yard TD run, then turned a TCMS interception into another touchdown with a 29-yard run shortly thereafter to take a quick 14-0 lead.

Both teams would trade drives throughout the second quarter, but after a TCMS lost fumble late in the half, Bridgeport would again capitalize, scoring on a 6-yard TD run to take a 20-0 halftime lead into the locker room.

To start the second half, the Braves would again find the end zone, breaking off a 40-yard run with 5:59 left in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 28-0. In the 4th quarter, the Braves would tack on two more scores, a 1-yard TD run with 7:17 left and a 20-yard run with just 33 seconds left in the contest after another costly TCMS fumble.

“I’m very, very disappointed right now,” said TCMS head coach Bobby Beltner. “Bridgeport whipped us in every phase of the game. We will not beat a good team with four turnovers, dumb penalties, and playing scared. Hopefully we can put forth a better effort in the remaining three games because if we don’t, similar results will happen. I thought we were prepared and ready, so this one’s on me.”

The Knights (4-1) will be back in action tonight as they host Buckhannon Middle School at McKinney Field in Grafton.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
