FAIRMONT— Members of the Bearcat golf team continued to hit personal goals and make great strides in the game during two contests last week.
The first took place on Friday at Apple Valley Golf Course and would see the Grafton club take on East Fairmont’s and Preston County’s teams.
While the length of the course challenges even the most advanced of player, beginners are welcomed by the wide-open fairways.
Bearcat Dustin Keener once again handled the course and competition with a display of athleticism beyond his years.
The sophomore continues to wow fans and coaches, leading his team at every meet so far this season.
Through the nine-hole course, Keener shot a 50 and was followed by teammate Brayden Palmer, who has also been working to see improvement in his game and recorded a 50, as well.
Also taking to the greens for Grafton were Corbin Knotts, who shot a 51, Wyatt Poling scoring a 53, and first-year golf team member freshman Caleb Stewart who came in with a score of 64.
The Bearcats combine for a total of 204, and while they continue to hit personal achievements, it wouldn’t be enough for them to take the win.
Preston County claimed the match with a total of 184, with team member Stephen Felton earing Low Medalist, shooting a 41.
East Fairmont took second place at the match, with a team total of 189.
“This was a long course, but this young team continues to improve,” noted head coach Ed Moore.
Up next, the Grafton team took on Fairmont Senior, on the Polar Bears’ home course at the Fairmont Field Club.
This nine-hole course is said to be one of the most thought-provoking courses in the area, starting out with the inviting par 4 on hole one, to having golfers roam the hilly terrain of the par 5 number nine. The course challenges golfers of all skill levels and seemed to bring difficulty to both clubs.
While Fairmont Senior brought with them some of their top golfers who had been consistently earning Low Medalist, the Polar Bears struggled with their swings, allowing Keener to once again claim Low Medalist.
Keener put on another great performance, shooting a 44.
“Dustin has been a great contributor to our low team scored this season. He continues to improve and show that he is on the path to success in this sport,” Moore commented.
Also representing Grafton at the match was Palmer (54), Poling (55), Knotts (55) and Stewart (68).
Fairmont Senior’s Landen Berkley, Caden Musgrove and Triston Wolford led the Polar Bear club tying with a finishing score of 45.
“I’m proud of the way the kids have been performing, regardless of the wins and losses. Personal strides are wins in my book,” Moore shared.
