Keener claims title of Taylor County Athlete of the Week

Dedication, a cool head under pressure and a positive attitude are all attributes of this week’s Taylor County Student Athlete of the Week.

Grafton High School junior golfer Dustin Keener has been spending a great deal of time of the greens, learning the game of golf since he was just five years old. Now, that time spent wandering the links, club in tow, has taken Keener to the next level of play, and seen him develop into a formidable opponent.

Keener has been leading the way for the Bearcats this season, with impressive finishes at recent matches. In fact, his cool head and clean, strong shots earned him the title of low medalist in four recent matches, three of those in a row.

While playing the Cats home course against University High, Keener outshot the competition, earning low medalist for the day with a score of 39.

He went on to showcase another outstanding performance while competing against teams from Fairmont Senior and Elkins High Schools at home, shooting one stroke better with a score of 38, again performing at the top of the list of players for the match.

Set on improving each time he steps onto the green, Keener shot a 36 while competing at Tygart Lake Public Golf Course against golfers from Lewis County and Trinity High Schools. The impressive score once again propelled him to the top of the list, earning him low medalist for the match.

Then, on Monday, Kenner tied for low medalist at Stonewall’s Palmer Golf Course. What made it even more impressive is that the Cats were competing against six other teams during the match including Bridgeport, Buckhannon-Upshur, Lewis, Philip Barbour and Petersburg.

During that contest, Keener shot a 43, and helped propel his team to a second-place position.

Not only does Keener possesses a strong athletic ability on the green, but he also displays a positive and encouraging attitude with his teammates.

“Dustin is a third-year golfer for the program, and he is truly something to see on the course,” said Head Coach Ed Moore. “Not only does he excel in the sport, but he is a great team player who the rest of the team looks up to.”

In addition to being an outstanding athlete, Keener is serious about his schoolwork and, according to Moore, maintains excellent grades.

“Dustin is just an all-around good kid,” Moore imparted. “He excels in whatever it is he is doing, and that’s a quality that will take him far in life.”

Congratulations to Dustin Keener for being named this week’s Taylor County Student Athlete of the Week!
