MORGANTOWN—WVU head football coach Neal Brown continues to build his recruiting class for next season, securing a big commitment from Dublin, Ohio defensive end Hammond Russell on Friday.
The 6’3, 235-pound 3-star recruit picked West Virginia over offers from Georgia Tech, Michigan State, and Pitt.
With COVID-19 creating havoc around the nation, Russell was unable to take a scheduled visit to the University of Purdue on March 22nd, although he had taken two prior visits to West Virginia’s campus which more than likely slid the Mountaineers to the top of his list.
Russell posted the following message to his Twitter account on Friday.
“Good afternoon everyone. First, I want to thank my parents, friends, family, and teammates for supporting me through my ups and downs. I would also like to thank the people who have made me a better player for challenging me on the field. Next, I would like to thank all my coaches at Dublin Coffman, as well as those who have recruited me in the last couple of years, to help me to get where I am today. With this being said I would like to announce that I am 110% committed to West Virginia University. Respect my decision #gomountaineers21. Love you all have a nice day.”
Russell, who is projected to play at either his typical defensive end position or the versatile bandit position for the Mountaineers, was recruited by WVU defensive line coach Jordan Lesley and tight ends coach Travis Trickett.
Russell makes the sixth commitment towards Brown’s 2021 recruiting class and the fifth 3-star commit according to Rivals, a popular website which focuses on college football and basketball recruiting in the United States.
