CLARKSBURG— The fighting Irish of Notre Dame High School didn’t stand a chance against the Grafton Bearcats Boys Soccer team on Thursday evening, as the Bearcats dominated the game and came away with a 5-0 victory.
Despite having the home field advantage, the Irish were unable to contain the aggressiveness of the Bearcat group.
Notre Dame won the kickoff opportunity, and once Grafton gained possession, they kept it.
Giving their best efforts to hold off the Bearcats, Notre Dame packed the goal box as Grafton made several attempts at scoring.
Near the 14-minute mark, senior Gage McVicker found an open Spencer Copeland, sending a pass his way. Once in possession of the ball, Copeland sent it into the box and punched it into the back of the net landing the Bearcats on the scoreboard.
From there, the team never looked back and would continue to make precise passes and find the back of the net.
At the 26-minute mark, sophomore Adrian Joyce made a cross pass to Junior Markus Carder in front of the goal setting him up for an easy score.
Assistant coach Jack Wolverton recalled that just about a minute later, Carder returned the favor and found Joyce for a cross and a score.
Continuing to display excellent teamwork with their passing clinic, the Bearcats increased their lead even further when junior Garin Chambers sent a great pass to a running Copeland, who made a beautiful shot from about 18 yards out, putting Grafton on top 4-0.
“At the 36 minute mark off a corner, junior Colton Sanders made a great header to find Spencer waiting to finish with his third goal,” noted Wolverton.
With this goal by Copeland the Bearcats led 5-0 at half time, before the game was delayed and then ultimately called early due to a lightening delay.
“Our defense played very well and didn’t allow any shots. We had some good possessions again and are getting better at finishing,” shared Wolverton. “This was a rough game, but we kept our cool and played some good soccer.”
The Bearcats will be back in action on Tuesday, August 31, as they take on East Fairmont at 8:00 p.m.
