Grafton Lady Cats Basketball takes on the Keyser Golden Tornadoes

GRAFTON—Coming off a convincing 20-point win against South Harrison last Monday, the Grafton Lady Cats basketball team took their 5-0 record and made the trip to Keyser on Thursday for a battle of sectional opponents.

The Golden Tornado got out to a quick 18-8 lead after one quarter and never trailed in defeating the Lady Cats by the score of 51-40 at Keyser High School.

After Keyser extended their lead to 20-8 early in the second quarter, the Lady Cats fought back, outscoring Keyser 11-8 in that period to pull to within seven points, 26-19, at the half.

The third period would be pretty even between the teams, as the Golden Tornado would turn their seven-point lead into eight to start the fourth, 38-30.

After outscoring the Lady Cats, 13-10 in the fourth period, Keyser would ultimately come away with the 51-40 victory to move to 6-3 on the season.

With the loss, Grafton drops to 5-1 on the season.

Leading the way for the Lady Cats was junior guard Bria Jacobs with nine points, two assists, two steals, and two rebounds. Sophomore Meredith Maier also had a solid game with six points, twelve rebounds, three steals, and two assists, while senior Tori Jackson added six points and a block. Senior Bailey Toothman had a nice game on the defensive side of the ball, recording five rebounds and a block to go along with her two points. Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Cats were Megan Kisner (5), Jocelyn Countryman (4), Mia Chambers (4), and Hailey Skiles (4).

Keyser was led by junior Kaili Crowl’s 14 points, followed by sophomore Alexa Shoemaker’s 13, and sophomore Summer Reid’s 11.

In JV action, the Golden Tornado was able to get out to a quick start in their 60-22 win over the Lady Cats. Averi Everline (16) and Alyvia Idleman (15) led the way for Keyser, while sophomore Sydney Friend scored 10 points for the Lady Cats. Also chipping in were Amber Smith (4), Izzy Swiger (3), Eva Jones (3), and Jordan Niggemyer (2).

The Lady Cats will have some time off before they are back in action again. They are scheduled to host Buckhannon-Upshur (4-2) on Thursday, January 9, at 5:45 p.m. in the JV game and 7:30 p.m., in the varsity contest.
