Grafton Golf takes third at 2022 Big 10 Tournament

Keener, Sheme and Poling earn conference recognitions

GRAFTON—The Grafton High School (GHS) Bearcat Golf team tested their skills against 12 other teams during the 2022 Big 10 Golf Tournament, held at Green Hills Country Club this past week.

The Bearcat team, comprised of Dustin Keener, Aiden Sheme, Corbin Knotts, Wyatt Poling, Caleb Stewart and Noah Uhl, showcased great skill, claiming a third-place finish at the event with a team total score of 345 points.

Bridgeport reigned supreme at the tournament with a combined total of 334, followed closely by Preston County, who finished out the day with a team total of 338.

Fourth place was claimed by Fairmont Senior (351), East Fairmont (361) came in fifth, Philip Barbour (363) earned sixth-place, North Marion (365) finished in seventh, Buckhannon-Upshur (376) came in eighth, Lincoln (380) earned ninth-place, Lewis County (391) finished in 10th place, Elkins (396) came in 11th and Robert C. Byrd (432) rounded out the finishes in 12th place.

Liberty did not field a team of four and did not qualify.

The Cats were led in scoring by Kenner, who shot an impressive 81, followed by Sheme, who earned 83 points on the course.

Poling (89), Knotts (92), Stewart (108) and Uhl (126) all took to the course during tournament action for GHS and showcased their skillset.

The keen eye and steady play by Keener and Sheme landed them on the Big 10 All Conference team. Among their ranks were Briar Manko (Preston), Stephen Felton (Preston), Jaden Gregory (Bridgeport), Brayden Stutler (Bridgeport), Caden Musgrove (Fairmont Senior), Brayden Cole (Philip Barbour) and Will Lemasters (North Marion).

Grafton’s Poling was named to the 2022 All Conference team, along with Landen Barkley (Fairmont Senior), Logan Huffman (Fairmont Senior), Tanner Bartholow (East Fairmont), Greyson Stewart (East Fairmont), Anthony Spatafore (Bridgeport), Colton Gerhards (Bridgeport), Mason Halfin (Philip Barbour), Nick Anderson (Lincoln), Tanner Miller (Elkins) and Andrew Chayce (Preston).

The Bearcat Golf team also hit the links at Preston Country Club last week, in a matchup against Preston County, University and Lewis County High Schools.

The Cats found some difficulty with the course and ended the day in third place, with a team total of 185 points.

University claimed victory, shooting a combined score of 161, followed by Preston in second, with a team score of 176.

Lewis County rounded out the scoring with 239 points, finding themselves in fourth place at the event.

The Cats were once again led by Keener, who shot 42 on the day, followed by Knotts with 45 points and Sheme with 46.

Poling (52), Stewart (56) and Uhl (57) rounded out the scoring for the Bearcats.

The Grafton golfers were back in action on Monday, when they traveled to Green Hills Country Club to take to the course in regional play. Results from that match will be featured in an upcoming edition of the Mountain Statesman.
