Grafton Bear Cubs end 2019 season with a 9-7-1 record

GRAFTON—The Grafton Bear Cubs’ 9U baseball team saw their season come to a close last weekend with a 9-7-1 record and victories against some tough competition.

“We’re all very proud of the work and time these kids put in,” said Bear Cubs manager Ben Kinsey. “Not only were we competitive but we also managed to scrape out some wins along the way.”

Those wins were recorded against the WV Bucs, Blennerhasset, HCPL Hitmen (twice), Morgantown Bombers (twice), Tribe Baseball, Bridgeport Tribe, and The Sting. Two of their seven losses were by two runs or less and they also tallied one tie, against the Ohio Valley Jokers.

“These are kids that are looking to play more than the 12 to 15 Little League games a year,” added Kinsey. “To be competitive as they get older, they simply need to play more. From game to game you could see the improvement and their baseball IQ continued to grow.”

Leading the way for the Bear Cubs at the plate this season were multiple players in various statistical categories. Luke Hess led the way with 15 hits for a .417 average, Chace Kinsey tied Hess with 15 hits for a .405 average to go along with his team-best 20 RBI’s, and Garrett Davis was right behind them with 10 hits and a homerun to bolster his .357 average. He also had two triples on the season. Cameron Gray and Jacob Moats were first on the team in runs scored with 14 apiece while Gray also lead the team in walks with 12.

On the mound, Grafton was led by Cade Mooney with a 2-0 record, Cameron Gray with a 2-1 record, and Mason Sheme with a 3-3 record. All three had more strikeouts than innings pitched as well.

“We will be looking to build off the success of this team and maybe add a team or two next year,” Kinsey went on to say. “Several parents have called to say they are interested in their kid(s) experiencing travel baseball.”

Assisting Kinsey this season were Chad Gray, Mike Moats, Eric Hess, Thomas Davis, Mike Nestor, Alan Wilfong, and Zach Scheme.

The full Bear Cubs’ roster (in no particular order) are Cameron Gray, Chace Kinsey, Cade Mooney, Logan Shaver, Caleb Wilfong, Garrett Davis, Mason Nestor, Chase Maier, Luke Hess, Mason Scheme, and Jacob Moats.
