Grafton 11U Baseball places third at Elkins

ELKINS—The Grafton 11U baseball team traveled to Elkins on Saturday to play in the Elkins Lightening baseball tournament. It was a one day tournament which saw the Grafton team playing three consecutive games going onto a third place finish.

In the first game of pool play Grafton faced the Fairmont Bomb Squad. Grafton recorded 14 hits on the afternoon and went on to win the game 16 to 5.

Grafton was led at the plate by Mason Markley and Cole Goldizen who had three hits apiece. Goldizen recorded his first homerun of the fall season during the first inning. The remainder of the hits came from Dustin Keener, Isaac Lough (2), and Isaiah Vanscoy (2), Austin Mayle (2) and Aiden Klepfel.

The runs were scored by Markley (2), Keener, Lough (2), Vanscoy (3), Goldizen (2), Mayle (2), Klepfel (2) and Charles Hoskins (2).

On the hill for Grafton was Mason Markey who threw all five inning and earned the first fall win for Grafton.

In the second pool play game Grafton faced top seeded Elkins. Grafton could only manage five hits in the contest on their way to a 16 to 4 loss to Elkins.

The Grafton hits were recorded by Markley, Keener, Vanscoy, Goldizen and Hoskins. Hoskins’ hit was a double that bounced off the fence in left center field. The Grafton runs were scored by Markley, Keener, Vanscoy and Hoskins.

On the hill Grafton was Treyson Nose who threw three innings before he was relieved by Goldizen who finished out the game.

Just as soon as that game was finished, Grafton immediately jumped into single elimination bracket play against the Sluggers. The three games in a row took a toll on the tired Grafton team as they fell to the Sluggers 5 to 3. Grafton scored 3 runs in the first inning but that was all they could put on the scoreboard. 

Offensively, Keener led Grafton with two hits followed by Lough and Vanscoy with one hit apiece. The Grafton runs were scored by Keener, Lough and Vanscoy.

On the mound for Grafton was Keener who threw the entire game for Grafton.

With the loss, Grafton was eliminated from the tournament, but came home with a third place finish.

“The kids have really come a long way since the end of the Little League season”, said Manager Bartsel Keener. “We still have a lot of work to do but we plan to keep this group together and play in as many tournaments this fall and spring as possible.”

The team roster includes: Mason Markley, Dustin Keener, Isaac Lough, Isaiah Vanscoy, Cole Goldizen, Austin Mayle, Aiden Klepfel, Treyson Nose, Charles Hoskins, Aiden Sheme and MJ Niggemyer.

The team is managed by Bartsel Keener with coaches Brian Lough, Zach Sheme and Tim Mayle.

The fall season roster is not complete at this time but will be published as soon as it becomes available.
