GHS volleyball wraps up second half of season

GRAFTON—The Grafton Bearcats volleyball team concluded the second half of their regular season recently with both the JV and varsity teams showing improvement as the season progressed.

On October 2nd, the Lady Bearcats hosted the Elkins Tigers and dropped a 3-0 contest (20-25,19-25,23-25) in the varsity match, while the JV’s won both of their sets (25-23, 25-16).

Grafton didn’t play another match until October 8th, getting almost a week to rest and recover from their busy schedule.

The Lady Bearcats would host the East Fairmont Bees and would lose that contest 3-0 (11-25, 25-27, 14-25), while the JV’s would also drop their two sets (10-25, 8-25).

The very next night, the Lady Bearcats would participate in a dual match against Preston High School, in Kingwood. The varsity would win two out of five sets (28-30, 16-25, 26-24, 25-16, 12-15), while the JV’s would win both of their sets (25-11, 25-23).

The Lady Bearcats would get another stretch away from competition as they didn’t play again until October 15th. The varsity would participate in a tri-match while the JV’s would participate in a dual match. The varsity would win two sets to one (25-20, 8-25, 25-22) while the JV’s lost in two sets, 10-25, and 23-25.

The Lady Bearcats would host the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears on October 17th and would fare well, winning three of five sets in the varsity match (18-25, 25-17, 27-25, 25-22, 15-13) and winning two of three sets in the JV match (24-26, 25-18, 25-18).

Five days later, on October 22nd, Grafton would host the North Marion Huskies and the JV’s would keep their momentum going, topping the visitors by winning two of three sets (25-23, 23-25, 27-25). The varsity would have a tougher time, however, dropping all but one of their sets (17-25, 25-17, 19-25, 22-25).

Playing their seventh match in October, the Lady Bearcats would travel to Shinnston last Thursday to face off against the Lincoln Cougars. Both squads would win one of their three sets on the evening.

Grafton was back in action on Monday night as they hosted Notre Dame (varsity only) but results from that match were not immediately available.

They are also scheduled to begin sectional play on November 4th vs. Keyser at Philip Barbour High School starting at 6:00pm.
