GHS volleyball gets started at Preston

GRAFTON—The official 2019 volleyball season kicked for the Grafton Lady Bearcats’ volleyball team this past week as they hosted the Preston Knights at home on Thursday and came away with a solid win.

The JV teams kicked off the action for the evening as the Lady Cats won both contests by the scores of 25-20 and 25-13. Senior Kassidy Simmons had three aces and two kills while freshman Emily Poling added five kills. Senior Hailey Pauley also tallied four kills.

In the varsity contest, the Lady Bearcats won three of the four contests by the scores of 25-10, 11-25, 25-19, and 25-14.

Senior Morgan Harrison had eight aces, three kills, and one block for Grafton. Sophomore Payton Shreve also provided excellent play with four aces, seven kills, and two blocks.

Sophomore Aniesa Taylor had three kills while fellow sophomore Ashley Harrison provided one ace and one kill.

Others to see action were junior Katie Scherzinger with two blocks and sophomore Sydney Friend with one ace.

“We had a great start to the season,” said GHS head coach Mary Kay Scherzinger.

The Lady Cats will return to action on Tuesday, September 10th as they participate in a quad match at East Fairmont High School which will include East Fairmont, Philip-Barbour, and RCB.

That contest is scheduled to start at 6:00pm.
