CLARKSBURG—The Grafton High School swim team headed to Clarksburg last Saturday, to compete in the 2018 Rotary Holiday Invitational.
Joining the Cats in the invitational were Bridgeport, Fairmont Senior, Robert C. Byrd, East Fairmont, Notre Dame, Philip Barbour, Lincoln, North Marion and Liberty Harrison.
In the team competition, the GHS girls finished in seventh-place, while the boys finished the meet in fifth-place.
The top finishers for the GHS girls were Payton England, who finished fifth in the 100 yard butterfly, and Natalie Satterfield, who place fifth in the 200 yard backstroke and sixth in the 50 yard free.
“I’m very proud of Payton for coming in, after taking the ACT earlier that morning, and finishing fifth in the 100 fly,” said head coach Heather England. “She was among our top individual finishers on the day, along with Nat (Natalie Satterfield) who placed fifth (100 back) and sixth (50 Free),” she added.
Luke Nibert paced the boys team with a sixth-place finish in the 50 yard free and swam the first leg of the 200 yard free relay. The relay team pulled out a fifth-place finish in the event. The relay team roster also included Matt Cather, Calvin Wise and Blaise Nibert.
“The biggest highlight for me as a coach, was seeing Caroline Maier, who has been working so hard in practice on her distance events, come out Saturday and cut fifteen seconds off of her 200 free, and almost a full minute off of her 500 free time.”
“We had several other personal best times on the day, so our young team is already enjoying the results of their practice sets,” she concluded.
The Cats were back in the pool on Wednesday night and the results from that meet will be in a future edition of the Mountain Statesman.
