GHS softball 4-3 in seven game stint

TAYLOR COUNTY—Over a seven-game series, the Lady Bearcats softball team went 4-3, recording big wins over Preston and Wirt Counties, along with an exciting narrow victory over Williamstown. 

The stint of games began on April 12, with the Lady ‘Cats taking an 8-1 loss to Robert C. Bryd. Savannah Wyckoff scored Grafton’s lone run. 

The following day, the team entered a double header against Preston County, claiming victory in two high scoring affairs. To start the day, the Lady Bearcats earned a commanding 11-1 victory. During the second contest against Preston, Grafton put up more than 20 runs, taking the win with a final of 22-9. 

However, coming off the two big wins, Grafton was handed back-to-back losses against some tough competition. 

On Thursday, April 14, the Lady ‘Cats found themselves struggling to overcome Lincoln’s early lead, and ultimately dropped the game 9-0. Also, unable to recover from an early Fairmont Senior lead, Grafton’s Frederique Maloley would score the team’s only run of the contest in the 7-1 loss. 

Rounding out the week’s worth of games played in just six days, Grafton finished strong with two wins during a double header against Wirt County and Williamstown. 

The Lady Bearcats tallied 12 runs in the second inning on Saturday, to boost them to the 13-2 victory over Wirt, during five innings. 

Grafton’s 13 runs were scored off 13 hits by Maloley, Gracen Purkey, Amber Smith (2), Ava Schommer-klebe, Kaleigh Spiker, Wyckoff (2), Jade Hall and Mattie Shaver. 

Directly following the win, the Lady Bearcats would meet up with Williamstown taking a hard-fought win. 

Both teams would bring one home in the first, for a 1-1 tie at the top of the second. Grafton was able to pull away in the next inning, outscoring their opponent 4-1 over the frame. 

Going scoreless in the third, while Williamstown put up two runs to close the gap, the Lady Bearcats fought back with intensity adding a run in both the fourth and fifth innings. 

Looking for the come-from- behind victory, Williamstown erased their scoreless fourth, bringing two home in the fifth. 

Grafton once against outscored Williamstown in the sixth, 2-1. In a final stitch effort, the Lady ‘Cats’ opponent would have Grafton on the edge of their seat, knocking in two more runs in the final inning. 

However, their efforts fell short, and the Lady ‘Cats claimed the 9-8 win. 

Grafton will be back in action tonight, at home, recognizing their senior players before first pitch at approximately 4:45 p.m.
