GHS remains undefeated after win over BU

GRAFTON— The Bearcat soccer team remains undefeated after a recent home matchup against the Buckhannon-Upshur (BU) Buccaneers, and it was an exciting contest from first touch to last whistle, according to coach Jack Wolverton.

Both teams started the game with strong passes and seesaw play, for the first 20 minutes of action. While Grafton had created several scoring opportunities, they just weren’t able to finish.

But the Bearcats had the home field advantage with the stands full of fans including the Grafton High School football team and other fellow GHS students among the spectators cheering them on, giving them a much-needed spark.

With the crowd-fueled adrenaline, the Bearcat defense came together, forcing a BU turnover and taking possession.

With a long pass from Gavin Wolverton to Layne England, who was able to make a move on a Buccaneer defender for the long shot, the Bearcats earned their first goal at the 25-minute mark.

The score would remain 1-0 throughout the remainder of the first half, as Grafton’s defensive efforts kept BU out of their goal.

BU started the second half, hoping to stage a comeback picking up their efforts and attacking the ball, maintaining a decent amount of possession on the Bearcat’s side of the field.

Grafton, determined to hold on to their winning streak, found another burst of energy and regained control of the ball, allowing their defense some much needed rest.

“From there, we played soccer like we know how to play soccer,” Wolverton commented.

The game clock winding down, the final minutes of play became tense with several foul calls.

When all was said and done, the Bearcats were able to hold off the Buccaneers and secured the 1-0 victory to move to 4-0-1 on the season.

“Our passing was very crisp, and our defense held strong,” Wolverton shard. “Hopefully we can keep improving and get better as the season goes. A little side note: the Bearcats have scored 20 goals and our defense has only had two goals scored against them!”

The Bearcats’ next game is slated for Tuesday, September 14 at Bridgeport.
