GHS Lady Bearcats defeat Elkins 1-0

GRAFTON—The Grafton High School girls soccer team returned home on Tuesday night, to face the Tigers of Elkins High School. The girls controlled the tempo and possessions most of the night, and went on to shut out the Tigers 1—0.

The first, and what proved to be the game winning goal, was scored at the 34-minute mark of the second half, when Rachel McKinney scored on a rebound from a shot by Ally Peters. Peters was credited with the assist on the goal.

Defensively, the Lady Cats were stingy as they allowed only two shots on goal in the contest.

Leading the way for the Bearcats was senior Suzie Clelland, who recorded eight of the 19 Bearcat steals.

Other players recording steals were Emily Knotts, Mariah Collins, Morgan Griffith, Maggie Dickey, Ally Peters, Kaycie Cochran, Kadie Dunham and Chloe Collins.

“We played a well-disciplined game,” said head coach Lorraine Isner. “It was a solid defensive game for us. We contained their attacks and were able to shut down their strikers. This was a good confidence builder for our defense,” she added.

The girls will be back in action on Thursday night, as they travel to East Fairmont to take on the Bees. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
