GHS girls finish strong at Battler Invitational


PHILIPPI – The Grafton High School girls track team ran in the Battler Invitational this past weekend in Philippi. The girls ran against teams from Preston, Philip Barbour and Braxton Country. In the team competition the GHS girls finished in third place.

In individual competition Jadyn Blackhurst placed first in the 100 meters, Jacinda Devart placed second in the 400 and Emma Curry placed third in the 800. Iva Kay Sipes placed third in the 3200, Meredith Maier placed second in the 100 meter hurdles and Brylee Knotts finished second in the 300 meter hurdles.

In the field events Maier placed first in the high jump and Stephanie Collins finished second in the long jump.

GHS has four relay teams finish in first place. The 4X100 team (Blackhurst, Josie Grass, Alison Utter and Devart), the 4X200 team (Blackhurst, Grass, Utter Maier), the 4X400 team (Devart, Blackhurst, Alyssa Satterfield and Maier and the shuttle team (Brooke Runner, Knotts, Uttr and Collins) all finished in first place.

“Every girl set a new personal record at this meet,” said head coach Becky Lake. “Alyssa (Satterfield) cut 10 seconds off her 800 time and our 4X100 team shaved another second off their best time. It was a very positive meet for our girls,” she added.
