GRAFTON—After a tough home loss to Robert C. Byrd back on February 5th, the Grafton Bearcats basketball team would win their next two games, both on the road against Preston and Liberty (Harrison) within a five-day span. They hit the road again on Friday for an away contest at Elkins and continued their winning ways, taming the Tigers by the score of 73-45 in a game that was never really in doubt.
The game began with a balanced scoring attack from Jack Faulkner, Blake Moore, Ryan Maier, Kaden Delaney, and Matt Gallo, as the Bearcats would march ahead to a 19-16 lead after one period of play. Grafton would then buckle down on defense, holding the Tigers to just seven second-period points as they took a 35-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the third period, the Bearcats would go on a nice run, with Faulkner connecting on two 3-pointers and scoring nine points in the quarter while Maier and Logan Beltner would each hit threes to put the Bearcats up 55-35 heading into the final period of play.
Maier would hit three more 3-pointers in the fourth, putting an exclamation point on the Bearcats’ convincing 28-point win and sending them to a four-game winning streak.
Faulkner led all scorers with 25 points while Maier’s three-point clinic was good enough for 15 points. Junior Blake Moore notched another outstanding game, accounting for 14 points and connecting on two three-pointers in the contest. Kaden Delaney added nine points while Matt Gallo chipped in with seven. Logan Beltner rounded out the scoring with three points and played solid minutes on the floor.
“It was the best game we played all year,” said Grafton head coach Michael Johnson after the game. “We defended well and ran offense well. It was an all-around team effort. Hopefully we are peaking at the right time.”
In the earlier JV contest, Elkins got the best of the Bearcats by the score of 68-57.
Sophomore Justin Spiker scored 33 points for the Bearcats in the loss while junior Dante Owens added 11 points. Rounding out the scoring for Grafton was Luke Wiseman (5), Carson Lambert (4), James Helmondollar (2), and Aden Hartley (2).
Grafton (10-8) will be back in action tonight as they host the Philip Barbour Colts in a 7:30pm contest at Scotty Hamilton Gymnasium. The JV game will tipoff at 5:45pm.
